Professor Him Chatterjee, India
Artist, Academician and Public Art Practitioner
Professor Him Chatterjee is an artist, academician and public art practitioner whose career spans more than three decades of creative practice, teaching and cultural engagement in India. His work is rooted in the belief that art should not remain confined to museums and galleries, but should become an integral and accessible part of public life.
He is best known for his monumental public art. He was felicitated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India for creating the world's longest public artwork at the Pragati Maidan Tunnels in New Delhi, and went on to create an eight-kilometre-long work of some 700 columns within the Dwarka Expressway Tunnel. His sensitivity to colour comes from his early training under his father, Shri Sanat Chatterjee, a prominent artist of the Bengal School of Art.
Associated with Himachal Pradesh University since 1994, where he served as Chairperson of the Department of Visual Arts, he currently serves as Vice Chancellor of Sir J. J. School of Arts, Architecture and Design, Mumbai. He is also the founder of the Sanat Art Foundation near Shimla. His journey is guided by a simple conviction: art belongs to everyone.
